We hope you all made it through Sandy safe and sound.  On the whole, the farm fared okay.  We were lucky to not even loose our power. The wind did a little damage to the roof of our mobile chicken wagon, but the chickens made it through just fine. One of our high tunnels made it through completely intact,

the other did not fare quite as well.  Our fields are saturated with rain water after receiving over 8 inches of rain and some of our crops with more tender leaves were a little beaten up by the strong wind and rain, but overall, I think our crops survived the storm okay.

fall sugar snap peas

Coming soon…

This year we tried planting some sugar snap peas for a fall harvest,  and it looks like we might actually have some peas to harvest soon.  The plants are flowering right now and just forming some small pods.  So, we may have some for you in the next week or so.

baby ginger rhizome

We also experimented with growing ginger in one of our high tunnels.  It is a tropical plant that needs a long growing season.  In the mid-Atlantic states, we don’t have a long enough growing season for ginger to fully mature, so we will be digging it as immature or baby ginger.  You can use baby ginger as you would mature ginger except you don’t need to peel it.  Here is a link to a photo of a rhizome we dug a few weeks ago.  And for more information about growing ginger, here is a link to the company where we bought our ginger.  We hope to have some ginger to offer soon.

Coming soon…

Next week we will harvest the first of our fall cabbages and will have both red and green cabbages at pick-up.  We also plan to start harvesting our fennel.  And, we will  probably have spinach again next week.

We grew several varieties of onions this year and so far have distributed purplettes (the mini red variety), white, and the red torpedo.  Soon we will start bringing our yellow storage and red storage varieties to distribute at pick-ups.

We are also just about finished with our stock of Spanish Roja garlic and will soon be switching to a variety called Music.  If you wanted to try planting some of the Spanish Roja this fall, now is the time to grab a few heads to set aside as seed garlic. (We plan on planting our garlic towards the end of this month.)
